I keep getting email after email from Hendrix fans saying I was right to have articles on playing Hendrix material your way, not Jimi's.
Thanks everyone. I really appreciate that.
In some ways Jimi is the ultimate Anti-Guitar-Hero.
He did it differently than everyone and no one could come close to his textural ability and nuances on the axe. There may be guys who can out do Hendrix and his ability to play scales and fast moving chords and licks.
But he was in a different world altogether because he made the best
guitarist's think about where they should be taking their individual
ability. As well, how not to limit what you can do,because you can
only take guitar playing so far, and the rest is improvisation,
interpretation and phrasing.
I think Hendrix tried to actually play less, meaning the tempo and
learned how to use effects properly from the makers of the Octavia,
Fuzz Face and the Uni-Vibe which is a rotating Leslie speaker.
I still say most players don't use stomps and effects pedals to the
benefit of their playing. They use it too much or it isn't congruent
to the type of player they are.
Free Form Jazz and Blues were Hendrix mainstays, and he built upon
those genres and improvised on the fly. It would be interesting
to know if he actually changed many of his original works because
he felt that they weren't quite what he wanted.
Ask Hendrix producer Eddie Kramer I guess.
Hendrix did what he needed to do,not to impress anyone, but to
just play because he liked playing with other musicians.
Little did he know he was the Tiger Woods of the Axe.
