Mick Ronson played with such bands as The Rats early on in England. He was a well known session man who played alongside David Bowie and Ian Hunter as well. In this short but illuminating interview he talks about playing on stage and learning a new band's material. Randy Rhoads who is one of the best metal axemen held Ronson in high praise in his Bowie days.
And Mick elaborates on doing what you want and taking the right chances to do what you really want as a musician. You'll find other great Ronson material on Youtube, but his best was on vinyl playing with Bowie and Hunter.
