This is a great repost I felt just had to go back up. This little post and videos from one of Hollywood's elite script writers for TV back in the 60's, 70's and 80's gave us some of the best shows of all time. I do wish he wrote Barney Miller, which is one of my favorite of all time. This article and videos from Steven J. Cannell will show you how to approach people in the recording business and become the writer and musician you always wanted to be, and should be.
Before I go on, Stephen has passed on and much peace to his family. You'll find all kinds of great material online that musicians, tv and film writers can learn from. I'm amazed at how much value he created for writers and people in performing arts. Thank you Stephen.
Stephen J. Cannell, is known as one of Hollywood's greatest writers but had a learning problem when he was in high school.Dyslexia. Some how he managed despite all that to make mega-bucks in Hollywood. He wrote and co-wrote the 60's show Ironside and Columbo. Cannell also wrote the famous A-Team show which is coming out with a movie this year. Then Wise Guy and Hunter.Cop action dramas were a big part of his repertoire.

The Famous Stephen J.Cannell Part At The End Of His TV Shows
If he could take a creative writing course and never stop writing regardless of never making a dime for years, you musicians can write songs and music that can make you money in CD sales and gig cash galore. Creating your own product like Cannell did will make you more money in the long run as a musician.
When Cannell started writing pilots and co-writing for shows,he made about 600 a week. When his agent figured out he could develop pilots and make 10's of thousands, he was hooked. Players, you can make your own original work and write for bands to create Joint ventures that benefit you both. Creating value for someone else like I always talk about.
But if any pilots got made Stephen received a bonus of over 100 G's. Hows that for being a dyslexic writer? Still think you can't write a song. Just learn from others. Remember in the 70's and 80's when Cannell's logo for his production company would close the show? He'd be typing and he'd rip the paper out of the type- writer and it would turn into an animated version of: Stephen J.Cannell Productions.
I still remember the music at the end. Musicians, be entertained a little by TV shows, but watch them for the music, writing and how actors play the dialog in the script. By the way, Cannell still used an IBM Selectric for his writing. He only used the internet for research. Still think you can't write songs or music, email me and I'll help you out. Musicians, you can make money as a writer and player.
