Musicians, what do you do to get out of a rut playing wise when your playing is a bit off,and your band sounds stale?
Here's a little simple tip...
Play with musicians other than your band members. It's a good way to get new ideas on guitar and actually take your playing up a notch. Even if the musicians aren't a s good as you.
I'm not kidding. Yes, you have to play with guys better than yourself, but sometimes you can get better ideas from the guy who's only been playing for 6 months, more than the guy who's been at it for 30 years.
This is because a relatively new player will do their best to come up with new riffs and phrasing, and be more inclined to be receptive to your ideas. Especially if your band isn't at the moment.
As well, this could work into session playing gigs with bands and give you more contacts to be able to have side projects.
And my last tip to get out of a playing rut; Just go to a local blues jam session and play with people who you've never played with or even seen. Just doing that without any preparation can be the best catalyst to playing better and coming up with new creative ideas.
And a great place to jam is called: The London Music Club in London,Ontario Canada. Every thursday night is blues jam night.
You may even get to see one of my favourite players Pete Denomme get up onstage without warning and play with who ever is up there at any given moment.
Hope these tips help get you out of a rut playing wise.
