Okay, I know this is simple stuff guys
and it's been done to death. But most of you don't follow what the
top musicians do,or use those tips to help your music careers.
Baffles me still.
Doesn't it make sense to do what the
top players do,since it works?
Or think about why your band is
spinning it's wheels going no where gig wise—and sell almost no CDs
either. But this article is on how to write better guitar riffs you
know you're capable of.
Some of the best ideas riff wise are
from the rhythm section of your band. That's why you need to get out
of the mindset of just listening to other guitar players strictly, and
listen to bass players and drummers to get riff ideas. When you're
practicing with your band have the bass player and drummer play both
alone and with one another, and listen and watch their phrasing and
playing patterns.
At first apply their patterns note for
note, recording them, then change them up just slightly just so you're
not playing them in lock-step all the way. But keep the same basic
patterns. This way you're writing from either a bass or drummer
perspective.
Zakk Wylde even wrote some material
from bass instead of lead guitar for one of his previous albums.
When you're a lead guitar player and
you just care about your playing and how everyone is supporting your
foundation tone or note wise, you're missing the point, and missing out
on developing great new rtiffs.
When you think and play in a way that
you learn and apply playing and writing techniques from drummers, bass
players and even horn players, and use it playing live or preparing
material for an album, you'll be more open to learning new riffs.
This way you'll open your mind and
playing on the fly to new riffs not just from other guitarist's.
This acts not just as a way to develop
different riffs, but as a way to record different material for selling
albums, getting session work and teaching other musicians.
As a musician you need to learn what
most musicians won't,and that way you'll be more in demand as a
musician and band.
Or go make that lovely poutine
sandwich.
