Musicians--Why you should do what you want as a working Musician--and a motivating Podcast about Sylvester Stallone

By Mark Grove

So many players only play once in a while and say they want to have their own band and do session work with well known artists. Most never do what's needed to do what they really want as musicians, and go back to their little lives in their daily jobs feeling secure and never developing their passion being a player.

It's all fine and good to have a regular job But if you're looking for a guarantee that you'll never leave that cushy little job, or be fired, that will never happen. The only guarantee is your employer will give you a job until you're dead. And that will never happen either.

How's that for a guarantee? A contract until you're dead. You're fooling yourself if you think the only way is a job. Get back to being a player in your own band and doing what you really want, and that's the passion of being a musician.

If you've been at it long enough you can make a supplemental income from it playing local gigs and opening up for other bands. If you read my article on

(Why the US financial crisis is an opportunity for you the musician)

you would have some ideas on how to make extra money playing gigs and from your expertize in the business providing services for other musicians as an article writer and session player.

There are numerous ways to make money in this game. I would rather make money doing something I love than something I hate. I listened to a podcast on YouTube that Tony Robbins the great motivating speaker talked about his friend Sylvester Stallone and why he only wanted to be in the movie business, even though Sly was totally broke most of the time before he made the first Rocky movie.

This is a Podcast that should be very enlightening to musicians because most make no money at the start going to Jams and trying to get a band together, practicing, composing along with marketing and booking gigs.

Take a listen and be amazed at why Stallone is where he is now, and why you should be doing what you want as a musician.

Still want to quit?

If you love music enough you'll never give up, and you'll do what's needed to be the musician you always wanted to be. It's not about the money but creating value for other musicians and then start making money for your band and still helping other people in the music business.

Listen to different musicians, learn from other musicians and read trade mags in the music biz, and keep practicing your ass off. Most players will go back to the safety of their daily lives, but if you really want to succeed as a musician you'll be willing to go through bad times with no money.

Take a look at our how to articles here on Canadian Guitar Player and become the musician others want not just to go see, but get advice from to get to the next step in doing what they love, and that's the spiritual benefit of being a real player in the music business.
