Guitar Players Learn How To Play "Sunshine Of Your Love"The Clapton and Hendrix Way
I've taken two videos of"Sunshine of Your Love" to let players compare the Hendrix and Clapton versions, and learn how to play it your way.
The first version is from The Hendrix Experience live in Stockholm
1969.The Clapton version is probably a rehearsal in a club or hall.
Note that the bass impact in each version from Noel Redding and Jack Bruce is very strong and guitar like.
The only time Hendrix plays it like the original,is near the end
of the song.At one point Hendrix mutes strings and uses a tapping
technique like a bass player would use.Experimentation was very
prevalent in power trios like these bands.
Odd metered timings in the Hendrix version was also at play.
Clapton Version: 1967
Odd metered timings and chord structures played like a blues band
just jamming made me feel right at home, and should be where your
band starts playing this song.Played very rough and raw yet the
structure of the song was still intact.
Both Jack Bruce and drummer Ginger Baker are both jazz guys and
take the rhythm to new heights, while Clapton is more of a traditional
blues and rock player.
The Hendrix version is different because they play with more modern
rock sensibilities rather than Cream.Study both these versions and
take part of one or the other and play "Sunshine Of Your Love" your
way.
Remember to include it in your blues jam list.
