I was reading an interview in Guitar World with one of the best players since Stevie Ray. His name is Eric Johnson, and you'd be well advised to look him up and learn a thing or two.
Joe Matera the writer of this article, and I assume the interviewer as well asked Eric if he had any advice for young players?
I won't say it word for word because I'll get in shit probably. Damn literary police.
Eric said to find players you like and start to use some of their style in your playing. he said that by doing just that you will learn all the little nuances of their phrasing, texturing and chording. Those are my words.
It really gives you a simple way to get better. Listen to them play and watch the way they play and how they use the fretboard and the way they play. Whether it's more of an aggresive or laid back feel and give on their guitar.
Then he said something very illuminating. Take everything you've learned from one player and start playing your way, which may be the hardest part of all, but the most satisfying and you'll make a living better with your original playing style than just copying. I think Eric would agree with that.
I'm using mainly my words here guys. Just saying what Eric would say, only my way.
