Why You Need To Play Various Types Of Music And Learn from Different Musicians

Picture of Paul Kossoff from the band Free. He's the type of player who would of told you, "learn from the best players who get no recognition". He played better than Jimmy Page in my books, and composed some of the greatest songs of the late 60's early 70's. "Don't be like every other guitar player or person for that matter".

Okay, I glommed another article from my favorite writer, period. What this guy has to say coincides with playing different types of music. First of all he talks about ingratiating yourself into different social settings in life. Anything from criminals to nice people, to the business sharks. But for our purposes here, we're talking about musicians. But I implore you to read this writer's article.

He's a musician, one of the top advertising copywriter's period and a great guitarist. His name is John Carlton. In his article he talks about getting to know your audience. For you that's other musicians and people in the music world. If you just play blues why not try to play jazz and country with some local players just to mix it up, and maybe take your playing to a higher level. I think it would help.

I'm not saying you have to spend time with the dregs of society, but just to get a wide variety of experiences music wise, whether it's jamming, playing session work live or on a studio album, or writing songs for a local player. You'll love John's writing!! He thinks like an old 60's and 70's guitar player, and his writing is off the wall guys!! You'll learn not just about business, but how to get to know, not just other music and musicians, but your audience who come to see your gigs and buy your CDs.

It's well worth the investment in your time. You'll learn how to be a better writer as well from John.

I'm going to leave you with the link to his article and his website. Great material you'll never get bored reading and taking to town with guys. http://www.john-carlton.com/2007/06/the-continuing-saga-of-the-sales-challenged-geek/

That article will help you get to know your audience better. Okay, here's John's website as well. Literally a way to get an MBA without having to go to a regular school. Plus, you'll learn how to take your playing further as a result.
