Why Johnny Carson Is Vital For Musicians To Learn From

I keep going back to a time when entertainers and entertainment meant something to people, and wasn't just about the next soundbite from so called musicians or actors.

Johnny Carson was one of the most down to earth talk show hosts around, and he resonated with everyday folks more than any talk show yes men do today. I grabbed a video from 1969 of Johnny with Bob Hope, Dean Martin and good old George Gobel. The reason I think you the musician should learn from Johnny is he always had fun even at the cost of making fun of himself. That's what you should do onstage if you're playing a gig. Most musicians and entertainers want to make fun of others.

Creating value without coming across like someone who's only in for themselves is what Johhny was all about. What I mean is he wasn't in it for himself, and his talk shows were like you and me sitting in a friend's home having fun, telling jokes and enjoying just being in the company of good friend's or family. That's how you should be onstage conveying a feeling of warmth, fun and being in it for your fans, not yourself. And that's what Johnny was all about. And that's how he was able to make you and me laugh, and a fortune at the same time. You'll love this video and it bringing you back to a time when musicians and entertainers were hip, cool and had fun in life.
