Why Players Like You Need To Learn Rig Set Up From Jerry Cantrell

By Mark Grove--This is a repost that's 'uber vital to getting the sound and tone that's all yours.

Cantrell is definitely a throwback to Classic Rock with his way of playing and his main amp and guitar. Okay most of you know the drivel from his early days with Alice in Chains. I wish Lane Staley didn't kick though. Reminds me of Thin Lizzy's Phil Lynott and how he passed on. But this article is about gear, which I bloody well love. Part of the reason AIC plays like Retro-Rockers, is they glommed on to 60's and 70's rockers who used analog gear that had warmth and tonal quality to beat all hell. Alright, lets get down to brass tax here. Cantrell uses a Les Paul for the Rock based material, and the heavier tracks he uses a G&L Rampage along with Bogner Amps. Jerry said in an interview this year in GP the amp he uses on a regular basis is a Bogner Shiva. Jerry's Pre-amp which is even more important in my books, is a Bogner Fish.

Another aspect of Cantrell's playing and sound is getting a good--not necessarily a perfect tone from your rig. Dee Curtis our consultant here on the blog, Dee and I always talk about tone in our talks and getting it down before gigs or practice. Because tone can cause you all kinds of grief when it comes to playing, or recording. I asked Dee, what's more important, learning to be able to play great when you first start playing, or setting up your amp and guitar right, before you start learning to play.

Because without proper tone, not just a beginning player's tone is off, but their playing ability as well. Dee said it was so important to be able to set up your rig properly before ever having designs on being the next Cantrell or Hendrix. I should put up an article from Dee on how to properly set up your guitar and amp for great tone and playability. In this last part I'll include info on Bogner amps and preamps. As well, Jerry's strings and pickups  he uses.

Jerry's Axe, Rig and Other Stuff Too:

Strings:Dunlop--.010 to .046

Pickups--Seymour Duncan JB Pickups

Effects--Signature Jerry Cantrell (Crybaby Wah)
Based on the Hendrix version but with new electronics

Guitar: G&L Rampage

Amps: Bogner Shiva,Bogner-Fish Preamp

I wouldn't suggest most players buy a Bogner, It's pricey. Oh, a little over 2 G's guys. Start off with a small practice amp like a Peavey. Use no effects, but use a guitar you can handle and set up properly. Any pick- ups or string changes you can make when you gain more knowledge. Jerry knows his stuff and can afford it. As you know Jerry has his own signature Crybaby Wah as well. One of the best Wahs period. So much success in the setup of your rig and getting the tone you need.
